Title 24 for Warehouse and High-Bay Lighting
Warehouse areas are one of the space types where occupant sensing controls are explicitly required, and their lighting power allowance is set separately from the office and circulation areas in the same building.
Occupant sensing is required here by name
Warehouse areas appear on the short list of spaces where occupant sensing controls are required, alongside library stack aisles, corridors and stairwells, offices over 250 square feet, and parking and loading/unloading areas. So a warehouse relight is not a fittings-only project — the controls come with it.
That matters more in a warehouse than in an office because the aisles are large, sparsely occupied for much of the day, and the fittings are high output. It is the space type where sensing saves the most and where its absence is most visible.
Allowances follow the area, not the building
A distribution building is rarely one function. Racking aisles, a packing area, a small office block, corridors and a loading dock each carry their own lighting power density under the Area Category Method, and the permitted total is the sum. Calculating a warehouse as a single undifferentiated space usually produces the wrong number in both directions.
Why mounting height changes the design but not the rule
High-bay fittings deliver more light from fewer positions, which tends to help against a power allowance rather than hurt. The constraint is more often the controls: sensing has to work reliably at height and across an aisle, and a layout that satisfies the allowance can still fail the acceptance test if the zoning does not respond as required.
Parking and loading areas
Both are named for occupant sensing, and outdoor areas are assessed separately from indoor under the outdoor lighting allowances, which are layered by lighting zone. A site with a yard, a dock apron and a car park is running an outdoor calculation alongside the indoor one.
