Title 24 Requirements for Industrial Buildings
Two things define an industrial project: how much of the building is conditioned at all, and how much of its energy use is covered process rather than comfort conditioning. Process has its own documentation.
Process is a regulated component in its own right
Covered process sits alongside lighting, mechanical systems, the envelope, water heating, ventilation and electrical power distribution in the list of components the Energy Code regulates. It is documented on the process-systems forms — NRCC-PRC for compliance, NRCI-PRC for installation — rather than inside the mechanical set.
For a manufacturing or processing building that is frequently the largest part of the submittal, and it is the part least familiar to teams whose experience is in offices and retail.
Conditioned area is often the minority
Much of an industrial floor plate is unconditioned, and envelope requirements written around a thermal boundary apply where one exists. Conditioning part of a previously unconditioned building is newly conditioned floor area, treated as an addition, which brings the enclosing surfaces into scope for the first time.
Comfort conditioning versus process conditioning
These are not the same thing and the distinction matters for documentation. A space cooled to keep people comfortable is conditioned space. A space held at a condition to protect what is happening inside it is closer to process — and Section 120.2's setback requirements except zones that must maintain constant temperature to protect a process or product.
Lighting at industrial scale
High-bay production areas, storage, circulation and an office block each carry their own lighting power density. Warehouse areas, corridors and stairwells, and loading and unloading areas are all named for occupant sensing controls, so a substantial part of an industrial site requires automatic sensing rather than switching.
Where to start
By separating the building into conditioned space, unconditioned space and process. Those three categories determine which forms apply, and getting them wrong at the outset is the one error that is expensive to unwind later.
