Grocery is the retail occupancy where lighting is not the main event. Refrigeration is a covered process under the Energy Code, with its own documentation, and it usually dominates the compliance picture.
Refrigeration is a covered process
The Energy Code regulates covered process as a component in its own right, alongside lighting, mechanical systems and the envelope. That means refrigeration is documented on the process-systems forms — NRCC-PRC for compliance, NRCI-PRC for installation — rather than being folded into the mechanical set.
For a supermarket that is the largest single part of the submittal, and it is the part most often overlooked by people who expect a retail project to be a lighting exercise.
Display lighting still applies
Table 140.6-C carries retail sales area categories and allowances for wall and floor displays, and a supermarket uses both. Refrigerated case lighting sits inside the display picture, so the lighting and refrigeration scopes are not as separable as they look on a drawing.
Conditioning a building that is also being cooled
A supermarket rejects a great deal of heat from its refrigeration into the space it is also conditioning, and it holds open refrigerated cases in a conditioned sales floor. The mechanical design has to work with that rather than against it, and the economizer requirement applies as it does elsewhere above 33,000 Btu/hr of design cooling capacity.
Back of house is its own set of space types
Sales floor, refrigerated storage, dry storage, preparation areas, corridors and a small office block each carry their own lighting power density. Where the store includes a commercial kitchen for prepared food, the kitchen exhaust requirements apply to it — including demand ventilation above 5,000 cfm of combined hood exhaust.
What to establish first
The refrigeration scope, because it decides whether this is a process-systems project with lighting attached or the other way round. That answer shapes the documentation, the forms and the testing.
