Title 24 Requirements for Warehouses in California
Two things decide warehouse compliance: whether the space is conditioned at all, and the fact that warehouse areas are explicitly named among the spaces requiring occupant sensing controls.
Conditioned or not is the first question
A great deal of warehouse floor area is unconditioned, and that changes the picture substantially — the envelope requirements written around a thermal boundary apply where there is one. Bringing a previously unconditioned bay into conditioned use is newly conditioned floor area, treated as an addition, and it pulls the enclosing surfaces into scope for the first time.
So the honest first question on a warehouse project is not what equipment is needed, but whether this space is becoming conditioned.
Occupant sensing is required by name
Warehouse areas sit on the short list of spaces requiring occupant sensing controls, alongside library stack aisles, corridors and stairwells, offices over 250 square feet, and parking and loading/unloading areas. A warehouse relight is therefore never a fittings-only project.
It is also the space type where sensing earns the most, because aisles are large, sparsely occupied for much of the day, and lit by high-output fittings.
A distribution building is several space types
Racking aisles, a packing area, an office block, corridors and a loading dock each carry their own lighting power density under the area category method, and the permitted total is the sum. Calculating a warehouse as one undifferentiated space produces the wrong number.
High-bay helps the power, not the controls
Fewer, higher-output fittings tend to work in favour of a power allowance. The constraint is usually the controls: sensing has to respond reliably at height and along an aisle, and a layout that satisfies the allowance can still fail acceptance testing if the zoning does not behave as required.
Outdoor areas are a separate calculation
Yards, dock aprons and car parks are assessed under the outdoor lighting allowances, which vary by lighting zone and layer together. A site with all three is running an outdoor calculation alongside the indoor one.
