Can You Use Duct Tape on HVAC Ducts? What Title 24 Allows

Not by itself. Title 24 bars cloth-back rubber adhesive duct tape on duct joints and seams unless it is paired with mastic and drawbands. Approved closures are mastic, tapes that meet UL 181, 181A or 181B, or UL 723 aerosol sealant, and every connection must also be fastened mechanically.

What the code text actually bans

Section 150.0(m)2D and 3D are narrow: joints and seams may not be sealed with cloth-back rubber adhesive duct tapes unless the tape is used in combination with mastic and drawbands. That description fits the familiar grey cloth roll. Other tapes must meet the listings below.

What counts as an approved seal

  • Mastic, tape or another closure system that meets UL 181, UL 181A or UL 181B (Section 150.0(m)1D).
  • Aerosol sealant that meets UL 723, applied to the manufacturer's specification.
  • Tapes and mastics on flexible duct must meet UL 181 and UL 181B; those on rigid fiberglass duct, UL 181 and UL 181A.
  • Mastic must be nontoxic and water resistant, and interior sealants are tested to ASTM C731 and D2202.

Gaps wider than a quarter inch

Where mastic or tape closes an opening greater than 1/4 inch, the Standards call for mastic combined with mesh or tape. A lone strip of tape does not meet that line.

Tape is not a connection

Metal duct connections and the inner core of flexible duct must also be mechanically fastened (Section 150.0(m)1C). Sealing and fastening are separate jobs, so a collar held on by tape alone fails the second even with a listed tape. Clamps and ties are covered in the flex duct installation rules.

Where a bad seal shows up

Section 150.2(b)1 applies these measures to altered ducts. When a furnace, coil or outdoor unit is replaced, the connected ducts are tested; an ECC-Rater (the role formerly called a HERS rater) verifies the result. If the system cannot reach 10 percent total leakage or 7 percent to outside, every accessible leak is sealed and the rater runs a smoke test with a visual check of plenum connections, boots and joints.

Test targets are in duct leakage testing, and keeping versus replacing is covered in whether to replace old ducts. Reports for an HVAC alteration start on the residential page.
