ADU Kitchen Range Hood ECC Verification

Yes. In an ADU a vented range hood is verified by an ECC-Rater, who checks the installed model against the HVI or AHAM directory for airflow or capture efficiency and for sound. The rater reads ratings rather than measuring the hood on site, and a model missing from the directories fails.

What the rater does at the hood

The Energy Commission ADU FAQ confirms the check applies to vented hoods installed in ADUs. Under RA3.7.4.3 it is a visual inspection with four steps: record the make and model, confirm the model is listed in the HVI or AHAM directory (or another directory the Commission approves), read the listed airflow or capture efficiency and the sone rating, and compare them with the requirement. No listing means no pass.

Your range fuel sets the target

Table 150.0-G is keyed to the ADU's own floor area and to the range fuel. Under 750 square feet an electric range needs a hood rated for 65 percent capture efficiency or 160 cfm, while a gas range needs 85 percent or 280 cfm, so choosing gas raises the target by 120 cfm. From 750 to 1,000 square feet the pair is 130 cfm and 280 cfm. Sound is verified in the same visit: one setting of at least 100 cfm at 3 sones or less, unless the lowest setting exceeds 400 cfm.

How the project type changes it

  • New detached ADU or addition: the hood must vent outdoors, because a recirculating hood cannot be used. A nonenclosed kitchen, which an open-plan studio may have, takes a demand-controlled hood.
  • Converted room: replacing a kitchen fan follows Section 150.2(b)1M, which can mean the current numbers, the airflow an earlier permit set (or 100 cfm if greater), or no requirement at all.

If the model is not listed

A hood absent from both directories cannot pass, so the remedy is a different hood, and the rater verifies again after it is swapped. Check the directory before buying; the installer separately proves the ducting.

Paperwork to hand over

The installer's CF2R-MCH-27-H records the fan type, the required airflow or capture efficiency and the make and model, alongside CF2R-MCH-32-H. The rater completes CF3R-MCH-27-H. Give the rater the model number and the directory page.
