How Does Water Heating Affect Title 24 Calculations?

The reference house carries a NEEA Tier 3 heat pump water heater with a uniform energy factor of 2.0, and every other choice is scored against it. Water heating sits in the efficiency budget, so solar panels cannot offset a weaker heater.

Why solar cannot rescue a poor heater

Efficiency long-term system cost covers space conditioning, water heating, mechanical ventilation and the self-utilization credit; solar sits in the total. Panels do not touch the efficiency half, so a gas tank or tankless unit must be paid back by the envelope, the HVAC equipment or the piping.

The three prescriptive routes

Without modeling, a dwelling uses one of these: a single 240 volt heat pump water heater in the garage or conditioned space, a single 240 volt unit that meets NEEA Tier 3 or higher, or a solar water heating system with electric backup and a solar savings fraction of 0.7. The first route adds a compact piping layout in zones 1 and 16, and zone 16 adds drain water heat recovery to both heat pump routes. The requirements page lists the details.

What the model does with other equipment

Any type or number of heaters the software supports can be entered. Multiple heaters in one single-family design generally trigger an adjustment that has to be offset elsewhere. A solar thermal system cannot replace the required solar electric panels, but it counts in the efficiency budget.

Piping and recirculation

A standard distribution system without a pump is the 1.0 baseline. Options with a multiplier below 1 earn credit, and those above 1 raise the simulated energy. Prescriptively, only demand recirculation with manual on and off control is accepted.

Installing a heat pump water heater

Where a unit draws unconditioned air, backup heat is required unless its compressor cut-off sits below the local winter median of extremes. Ventilation applies: an unducted installation space needs a volume of at least the greater of 100 cubic feet per thousand Btu per hour of compressor capacity or the manufacturer minimum, unless another method is used.

Small homes

New dwellings of 500 square feet or less may use an electric water heater with point-of-use piping, and a one-bedroom unit may use a 120 volt heat pump. See ADU heat pump water heaters and the installation page, then compare how a space-heating heat pump is scored. Our residential report models the water heater you choose.
