CF2R-SRA-01-E: The Solar Ready Certificate Explained

CF2R-SRA-01-E is the installation certificate for a new single-family home's solar-ready provisions. It comes into play in a subdivision of ten or more residences when the home has no rooftop solar, often because an exception applies. SRA-02-E adds the solar zone area worksheet, and STH-01-E covers solar water heating.

When a builder meets this form

The solar-ready provisions are mandatory for single-family homes without photovoltaics in subdivisions of ten or more residences. Many skip PV because an exception to the prescriptive PV requirement applies, and that is when the solar-ready paperwork is asked for.

Three forms, three jobs

  • CF2R-SRA-01-E documents what was installed to meet solar readiness, including equipment installed to qualify for an exception.
  • CF2R-SRA-02-E is the minimum solar zone area worksheet, needed only when the home keeps a solar zone.
  • CF2R-STH-01-E applies when solar readiness is met by installing a solar water heating system.

What the solar zone route puts on the plans

  • A zone of at least 250 square feet on the roof or overhang, and on steep roofs facing between 90 and 300 degrees of true north.
  • No vents, chimneys or equipment inside the zone, and roof dead and live loads shown on the construction documents.
  • A reserved spot for inverter and meter, plus a conduit pathway.
  • A main panel with a 200-amp minimum busbar and a reserved double-pole breaker space marked "For Future Solar Electric".

The occupant is also to receive a copy of those documents (Section 110.10(d)).

What the six exceptions do

They differ. Exceptions 2, 3 and 5 shrink the zone to 150 square feet, Exception 4 asks for half of the potential zone area, and Exceptions 1 and 6 swap in other measures such as solar water heating at a 0.50 solar savings fraction or demand-responsive thermostats paired with an additional measure. The manual says zone requirements fall away under an exception, but the Standards text for several still calls for a smaller zone, so read the exact exception being claimed.

Where PV forms take over

When PV is installed, CF2R-PVB-01-E documents the system against the CF1R and PVB-02-E does the same for battery storage. The rule behind all this is explained in solar-ready requirements and solar exemptions for a new home, with the wider picture in residential solar requirements.
